Anyone that can take some small amount of their time to explain to me how the terrain in Battlefield 1942 works. I have the following questions :).

1 : What is the possible sizes of the height maps?
2 : From what i understand the editor creates one huge texture that is then split into smaller textures that are used by the game. So each small texture bit is then used on a part of the terrain?
3 : When the game is running some form of detail texture is blended with the terrain that is close by?

Resolution of the heightmap image is limited to 1024x1024 pixels.. 2048 will work too but causes bugs / problems..
In terms of actual area, Ive had 64km x 64km map running - so very big if you want.. but of course results in low definition terrain when using the above heightmap resolutions

yes, big image is split..
A 1024x1024 resolution heighmap will split into 256 textures (16 x 16 components)
A 512x512 res heighmap will split into 64 (8x8)
and so on.

A single detail map is used per level.. this will show under all of your terrain texture. This is limiting in one resoect.. but can look good if you choose an environment that suits.
Its not distance based as such - at least not more than usual mipmaps provide.
