Creating high quality serverInfo.dds icons

Post by Diamondback »

Hi all,

I'm having difficulty creating good looking serverInfo.dds icons for my mod. It seems that the best I can get is an ugly, pixelated 16x16 icon. I am using GIMP. Basically I have a 1024x1024 px PNG with transparency, my logo, that I am trying to rescale to 16x16 in GIMP. I then export it to DDS with DXT1 compression and no mipmaps, and the resulting icon is the right size, but not as sharp as other mod icons (RTR and SW for example).

Does anyone use GIMP to generate serverInfo.dds icons and if so, would you be able to share a template to help me out please? Or any other advice that would be helpful.

Thank you,

There are simply not enough pixels, you only have 16 by 16 pixels.

Scaling thru software to such low sizes tends to turn it into a blob
shape with colors, technically correct but does not look good in
human eyes.

You are in old school territory once you start going lower than 64x64,
basically you have to do it manually in pixel art style.

Personally I scale it down to get a rough outline and shape, then
pixel art it from there. Reduce image to 256 colors to make your
life easier doing it. Using an app designed for pixel art does make
the process easier.

This page seems to be a pretty good intro and tools if you need:
